Charlotte Barnes, Lib Dem Candidate for Ludlow, has delivered and impassioned speech at her Party’s conference in Glasgow calling on the Government to make public transport free to all 16 to 18 year olds who are attending further education or training.
Charlotte said “The key point here is that it will soon be obligatory for all 16-18 year olds to either attend schools or training. Right across England this will hit rural families particularly hard. In Shropshire we are threatened with £900 bills for each pupil attending sixth form. If we are obliging young people to do this then it is only fair that their travel is either free or charged at a very low cost.”
After the debate, the Ministers responsible – Baroness Kramer and David Laws MP, agreed to review the situation with regard to rural 16-18 year olds
