Charlotte Barnes, Lib Dem Councillor for Bishops Castle, has urged Shropshire Council not to cut funding for Bishops Castle Youth Club – the only such facility for miles around.
Charlotte said “Youth services in Bishops Castle have been progressively cut back and now I understand that we may loose last remaining youth club evening on Monday nights. In a very rural area like ours there are very few facilities for young people and the loss of the club would be a major blow. I am attending one of the sessions to talk with young people about how strongly they feel about this threatened cut.

The Council has launched a Consultation about closing the club which meets on Monday nights. The Council is cutting £33 million from children’s services and is looking to reorganise the County’s Youth Services.

Charlotte concluded “People travel for miles – its the only club available for people to just get together for social reasons. Young people come from as far as Chirbury and Clun.

” As well as losing a club we would loose a great way of detecting and helping young people with problems. Prevention is better than cure and a lot cheaper too!
Lastly we would lose the youth worker’s knowledge and expertise.

“I will be strongly urging Shropshire Council to rethink this proposal and working hard with the young people to make sure their views are heard”
