CAMPAIGN TO SAVE YOUTH CLUB

Young people in the Bishops Castle Area have launched a campaign to save their youth club in the face of threatened council cutbacks.
They have written to the Leader of Council and Philip Dunne MP. In the letter they argue:
” We are writing to you as the Youth group from Bishops Castle who are fighting to save our Youth Office from closing the one night a week it operates. This provides the only Youth facility that Shropshire Council operates within the catchment area of this Secondary School which covers roughly 300 square miles and overall from the consultation document Shropshire Council the axe has seemed to hit the rural areas of the County the hardest.”
Local Shropshire Councillor Charlotte Barnes, who has been vigorously supporting the campaign, said “Youth services in Bishops Castle have been progressively cut back and now we may loose last remaining youth club evening on Monday nights. In a very rural area like ours there are very few facilities for young people and the loss of the club would be a major blow. As well as losing a club we would loose a great way of detecting and helping young people with problems and we would also lose the youth worker’s knowledge and expertise ”
The Council has launched a Consultation about closing the club. It is looking to cut £33 million from children’s services and is looking to reorganise the County’s Youth Services.

The campaigners have also collected a petition across the area and presented it to Charlotte Barnes to forward to the Council.
